I haven't yet been to South America but I am 25 and get told the same thing. At the end of the day it is only me that can decide. I know a website www.travellerspoint.com where alot more information can be given there from fellow south americans etc. but as long as you have your wits about you you should do ok. Points to keep in mind are not to display a large amount of wealth or any expensive jewellery, also in Rio De Janeiro Brazil - avoid the beach at night - in the day take the metro as opposed to the bus - it is cheaper and safer and watch out for dodgy taxis- look out for the radio operated ones and check the meter works. It's as well to bare in mind that this is a poor continent and people sometimes try to survive by any means possible. However, alot of backpackers (including myself) are heading out there now and have been out there and been fine so I'd say as long as you are fairly wise you should be fine. PS when do you plan on going? I am heading out to Chile (one of the safer countries in the continent) in December before going to Argentina, Brazil and Peru early next year? If you would like to meet up then let me know? Rach :)
