Hi, Im interested in watching the swirling dervishes. Where in Cairo can I go to watch them?
Do they perform daily, or only during certain months or festivals? thanks! |

I've a feeling (apologies to any dervishes out there if I'm wrong) that Egyptian dervishes are really just laid on for the tourists. They're probably regular at most of the major hotels.
Without looking up any details, from memory the Whirling Dervishes are a sect of Sufi mystics, who originated several centuries ago in Konya (any experts on Islam should be able to provide better information) and that they have been proscribed by the mainstream of Islam for a considerable time. A 'dervish' visited our boat when we took a Nile Cruise a few years ago. File under 'tourist tat', rather than cultural experience. If you want to experience Islam, visit a mosque. You will find plenty of the devout only to pleased to talk to you. If you want to see a bloke spinning round and round, try any English Town just after pub chucking-out time. ;-) |
