Hi Everyone! Taking into consideration the current state of affairs in Iraq and the recent terrorist attacks on Israeli tourists in Egypt, how safe do you think it is for Americans to travel to Egypt and Jordan? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Hi don't think you'll have any problems...except wanting to stay there even longer.

So long as you follow all the normal rules for travellers in other cultures such as

show respect for local people's views and feelings

show respect in terms of your dress and general demeanour

Be especially careful of your dress in and around mosques and religious centers

Try to get to know the locals, try to talk to them and find common ground...

Remember, it's only a very tiny majority who are ignorant enough to blame an American traveller for the ills of the Midle East, and US policies...

Also, make sure you follow the advise on the State Dept website for travllers...

I am sure you will have a wonderful time...

Travelling in Jordan poses no increased danger at all - you're more likely to run into trouble in your own home-town than you are in Amman or Cairo. Lots of Americans on the road in the Middle East at the moment - more than you might expect. People in the region are very aware of the difference between individuals and governments (they have to be, with the kinds of governments often foisted on them!)
