Recently, I was almost side swapped by a car that jumped out its lane in a blatant display of bad driving. It turned out that the occupants of the car were two Dubai policemen. They asked me to pull over. I co-operated with them fully in the usual drills like a demand for my licence and registration etc. but....the harassment began. The men tried to force me to admit that I had violated road rules. I disagreed, saying I would be happy to go to court and state my case. The officers then started their ugly behaviour, demanding my nationality etc., which incidentally is clearly marked on Dubai drivers licences. They then asked me to follow them to the local Murqabat local police station; I complied. When we got there, they threatened to imprison me for two days, impound my car and confiscate my drivers licence. A more senior officer demanded to know my religion and warned me of a 'big problem'! All this just for an alleged 'lane cutting' incident! I observed their growing aggressive and arrogant pressure tactics with growing distaste. It was a clear case of them misusing their authority to force me to accept their version of events; totally unfair. Finally, they created a couple of documents, everything only in Arabic, of course, and insisted I sign them; without anyone explaining a word of it. They said that I if I did this, I could leave. I had had enough of this harassment and complied, though I feel such a forced 'confession' is an absolute disgrace to any professional police force. Incidents such as this are not isolated, Dubai's glitz is built on rotten foundations; watch your step in Dubai.
