This is the first time I've posted such a warning but I feel that this hotel and its associates warrant it.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Aslan in Van (Lake Van---eastern Turkey) and my back-up money was stolen out of my room. I generally keep some back up cash locked inside my backpack, but made the mistake of leaving the bag unlocked for about an hour one night while I was eating IN THE HOTEL. The door was locked, however, and the key was in my pocket--so this was most assuredly an inside job. And given the narrow window during which the theft was actually possible--I wouldnt be surprised if the room hadnt been checked numerous times.

When I told the manager he was callous and rude, leading me to believe that he is either in on it or turns a blind eye.

Additionally--the "guide" (who is unlicensed) associated with this hotel is a rip off artist. He charges far more than the standard price for a trip to the local sights and may very well insult your culture or religion while driving you around. We all had the pleasure of being told that we would be refused from paradise unless we converted to Islam and also were told that our countries would be punished for current events.

This is VERY unusual behavior for a Turk and not at all to be expected in a trip to eastern Turkey. The Hotel Aslan, however, should be avoided at all costs.
