What do you want to do/see? Wildlife? Scenery? Culture? History?

It's a pretty big country with many sharp contrasts. I'd think about selecting some highlights and driving youeself, away from major cities.

We had three weeks birdwatching/sightseeing around west and central Turkey with a few days in Istanbul in 2001. If you follow the obvious links on www.birdtours.co.uk you can find my trip report which, although concentrating on birdwatching has plenty of stuff about travel logistics, driving and some major tourist sites (Pammukale, Efesus, Dalyan, Saklikent, the Lake District etc.). It might give you some clues or help you phrase your questions.

Wonderful country. Have an excellent holiday.

Hi JKeller, did you visit yet? I love Turkey and hope to be going there again this year. My favourite region is South West of Turquoise Coast - Gocek, Fethiye, Olu Deniz, Kalkan, Kas, Demre (Myra), Kekova Island (Simena).
I can recommend tours & jeep safaris from the company in Hisaronu (registered TURSAB), Mugla, South Med area: MYSTICAL TRAVEL 0090 252 616 66 99. Email info@hisarholidayclub.com (Ask for Ramos and say Scottish Carol sent you!) The nearest big town to Hisaronu is fishing port of FETHIYE.
If you stay in this area you can do paragliding, jeep safaris, mud bath tours, mountain villages etc.
Have much fun and keep in touch, Carol

I did a 3 week tour of Turkey last September...it is a stunning country, amazingly beautiful (especially Cappadochia, which is unique and unlike any where on earth!) and wonderful people. Here are some quick basic links for you...

  • for hostels and budget accomodation, see Hostel World - Hostels in Turkey
  • for the Back-Packer oriented tours see Fez Bus Tours - very useful !

  • for amazing 3 or 4 day cruises (from €25 per DAY !) from places like Fethiye (South Coast) around the islands to Olympos, see
  • Blue Yacht Cruises]
  • V-GO Boat Cruises, Turkey
  • In Olympos I stayed at Saban Pension Treehouses, but Kadirs is also highly recommended!

The buses are excellent, very comfortable, air-con, and excellent value. I mean REALLY cheap !

    Other useful links
  • Travel Outward Turkey Pages
  • Turkey.Com Home page

Book your hostel in Istanbul before arrival (I recommed the Sultan or Orient Youth Hostel from Istanbul Hostels - dorms from around €7 per night!) and they will probably collect you from the airport in their free shuttle bus!

The hostel will help you book onward bus travel to Gallipoli or Ephasus, Parmukale etc! Plus on the same street as these hostels that are right in the middle of the old historic center of the city you will find at least 4 or 5 travel agents that will book you onward travel in cheap and comfortable point to point coaches - or try the Fez Bus backpackers touring co.

    like these for example:

  • Istanbul (obviously !)

  • Gallipoli - stay at TJ's Hostel in Eceabat! Web site Tel: 90 286 814 3121 info@anzacgallipolitours.com - And ask for the tour of the battlefield by Kenan (pronounced Canon, yes Canon, like the camera !) - he is a world renowned historian and expert on the Gallipoli Campaign!

  • Ephasus / Selcuk
  • Pamukkale, Troy and Hierapolis ruins
  • Saklikent Gorge - a fantastic natural wonder (a moutain split in 2 by an earth quake !)
  • Fethiye (can pick up good boat / gulet cruises here!) and Oludenez beach (where they filmed the Blue Lagoon movie, and the best place in the world for Paragliding !!)
  • Olympos (that's where the famous Treehouses are!)
  • Lake Egirdir
  • Cappadochia & Goreme (this is the place for a balloon flight, but they're not cheap!)
  • Mt Nemrut and that region

just a few ideas to get you started. Also, use the links in my post above like Fez Bus - they have some very good options ...

    I hope this is helpful,

have you got your LP or Rough Guide or Lets Go guidebook yet?

    Don't miss Cappadochocia !!!

    Happy Trails

We specialise in carefully crafted escorted tours in Turkey, all with an archaeological focus - from an epic 19 day adventure In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great to a luxurious gulet vacation Sailing the Lycian Shore.

An established travel writer, I've even written a feature so you can read how I go about planning our archaeological tours and gulet cruises in Turkey Above all I strive not to cram in too much. I'd much rather give everyone a chance to sit in an ancient Roman theatre and savour the scene, nevermind the view, the birdsong, and the atmosphere, than cram in three sites a day on a whirlwind mission.

In 1994, I walked 2,000 miles across Turkey, retracing the route of Alexander the Great, and in the process fell in love with the country, its ancient civilizations, and the Turkish people. I've been devising and leading archaeological tours in Turkey ever since.

If anyone has any queries about trip planning, I'd be more than happy to assist.

    Best wishes,

    Peter Sommer
