Hi all

My dad (who is internet illiterate hence me posting for him) is very keen to buy a round the world ticket and go to places he has never seen before it is too late (he optimistically says!).

He is a young 60 and is apprehensive about travelling to culturally different places and on his own. I know he would like to go to Thailand for example, and is frightened of losing his way and ending up in bad company (he is not in the market for raving or brides - I hope!).

Does anyone have any advice for us planning his trip - places he should go to where he can glimpse culture without the shock? Places to avoid? Is it better to do US, Canada, Oz, NZ first and then try different cultures later?

Any pearls of wisdom, especially from older travellers who have been there and done that, would be most appreciated.
