We are going on a 16 week camping tour in South America from Feb - June, then onto New Zealand, OZ, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Bali, India, etc.
We are only planning to use our Sleeping Bags in South America as the rest of the trip we will be staying in hostels. Do we need sleeping bags in hostels??

In South America we need a 3-4 season sleeping bag. Would it be best to buy a 3-4 season sleeping bag that is cheap, then sell in or throw it away than buying a more expensive one and only using it for 4 months.
Basically will a cheap 3-4 sleeping bag do on a four month camp in South America ?

AND

Do you need a sleeping bag in hostels?

Asked the same question on travellersconnected and everyone pretty much said No that a sleeping liner would be best. Mind you South America isn't on my route.

I'm enclosed a reply on got from Hugo, who's on his travels at the moment.

"I have travelled throughout australia hitch hiking and through vietnam backpacking, and i can tell you now that you will not need a sleeping bag, dependent on your ability to stay away from the Sapa mountains in vietnam or the south of tasmania in australia, both countries are pretty chill and the accomidation you get is good and cheap, in oz your looking at around 15-20 AUD a night and in vietnam it ranges from about 3-9 dep"ndent on what you want in your room, or door bunk,

But as for taking a liner that is a must, although some hostels provide sheets i love sleeping in my own little peice of home as i know it is /relatively/ clean and bug free, I found this to be more of an issue in vietnam where it was hotter with the wet season, but even for dodgy hostles that try and charge you /like the place mentioned before in sweeden, bloody nice place to go though/ the fact that you can pick a cheap silk or silk imitation sheet up for about 10 USD before you go means if you use it twice you have made your savings already!!!!!

I unfortunately have a sleeping bag with me at the moment and want to get rid of it before I go home"
