Not quite Round-the-World Travel (and for that I apologise), but this was the section that was the best fit...

The BBC that featured a run down of the 50 places that everyone should see in their lifetime, as voted for by viewers of the channel's Holiday show. The results were included sights that everyone could agree are amazing (the Grand Canyon, the Taj Mahal and Sydney all came in the top 10). However the poll also included some surprises, such as Disneyworld finishing third, and Las Vegas being the most highly rated city (ahead of Paris, Rome etc.) My own personal choice would have been the Great Wall of China, which finished 20th.

I was wondering what attractions would be chosen by a potentially more discerning group of travellers, such as those posting on this board?

A wildlife park in South Africa or anywhere in Africa for that matter.

Llangollin, Wales - a fantastic little town for no particular reason except that it was unique and different.

Quebec City, Quebec Canada a fantastic historic city with wonderful people living there who all have that 'je ne sais quoi?' Joie de Vivre!

This is a really interesting subject and I am surprised there has been only one response so far!

I am puzzled with some of the results that the viewers of the show have chosen. For example, DisneyWorld coming in 3rd place, was this poll conducted by teenagers? Is a theme park more appealing than a country/city/town? In my opinion, most definately NOT!. Las Vegas was considered more popular than Paris or Rome. Although I have not been to L.V, it appears to be a tacky, superficial place, which tries to imitate other parts of Europe. My opinion is based on television footage and a close friends observations, he went several years ago!

My choices would be as follows:

Madeira - I have had two amazing holidays on this beautiful island. Based in the Capital Funchal, I travelled the whole Island and virtually saw every town and village. The city is so compact with a good range shops and restuarants. The cost of living is very inexpensive; a beer is approx 1 euro (66p roughly) in a bar, I was in heaven! The climate is sub-tropical, but it is alot cooler in the north as it is mountainous. I hope to visit "The Pearl of the Atlantic" this year. Incidently, the neighbouring Island of Porto Santo, has a wonderful beach. Its golden sands streach for approx 8km and it is probably one of the most undiscovered Islands in Europe. A true gem!

Barcelona - When you mentioned this City, the place just oozes so much style and safistication. This City truly has everything: beautiful architecture, great nightlife, fabulous restuarants and of course "Las Ramblas".

Rome - I have just returned from the Ancient City and it has so many historic sites that is impossible to see everything! Even though it is a captial City, it is very natural in apperance (ie no large shopping malls or U.S take-away establishments on every street) The public transport system is one of the most efficent I have used. Forza Roma!!

Galway - I guess I am biased as my Family originated from Ireland! Seriously though a great university City, numerous bars/pubs and shops, what more does one require!

El Arenal volcano, Costa Rica
Pammukale travertines, Turkey
The Parthenon at night
Barcelona - especially the Correfoc during the Merce celebrations
The Monteverde Hummingbird Gallery (also Costa Rica)
One of the quieter islands in the Scottish Hebrides - Colonsay, maybe, or Coll
The River Nile in Egypt (nothing against the other countries it flows through, but I haven't seen it there
Capadoccia, especially around Goreme,
and to complete a Costa Rican trilogy, take a pelagic trip into the Costa Rican theral dome, of the coast around Bahia Drake, for a chance to see thousands of dolphins and whales - check out the Delfin Amor website for an idea of what an experience this might be.
