We are going RTW and are trying to figure out what footwear we will need to take. Strong sports sandals are a must but we plan to do some hiking - the Inca trail and some hiking in S. Africa. Would sandals be enough? Is it worth taking hiking boots or is it not worth the extra weight? would it be better to buy a cheap pair on route? any advice would be great!

I have a friend who did some serious hiking in South America. She ended up bringing her Hiking boots. It was also very cold when she went. I, on the other hand, brought my heavy duty sandles, flip flops & tennis shoes. I do not plan on doing much hiking but have done quite a bit in them. My feet are very callused though, so I would recommend bringing a pair of closed toed shoes as well as sandles.
