How is Venice in December? I guess the big advantage will be that it's not crowded with tourists, but what will the weather be like? Will it be nice to walk around or is it cold/ rainy? Another thing: I've heard that on New Year's Eve they play classical music on the main square and nicely dressed up people dance there at midnight (waltz etc.). It sounded like a very special atmosphere - is it like that or is it a big commercial thing (possibly with a huge entrance fee)?
Any recommendadations for a hotel/ guesthouse in one of these old palazzos? Looking for something with character/ history. I'm aware that it wouldn't be the budget choice - but: is there anything affordable, not ridiculously expensive?
