Hello !

Im going to Crete, Greece at the end of july.

I need some hints, tips on the island.
What is the best place if I like to snorkel, take underwater photos ?

What do you recommend accomodation-wise ?
Im going there with a low cost carrier so I will organize the accomodation myself.

Im also thinking of renting a car.

Any recommendations for accomodation, car rental, restaurants, must-see's or general tips are HIGHLY WELCOMED :)

Thanks!

Dunno about July but when I've been there in the slack season I've always been able to rent a room by asking round in the village. Myrtos on the southern coastline is cool.

Alright, thanks for the info.

Last summer Rhodes was very nice so I thought I would give Crete a go.

Any hints for must see's , good beaches , good snorkel areas etc ?

Thanks!

Hi
It depends on where you're going on Crete - it's a big island 220km long with 4 mountain ranges splitting it up. It has fabulous snorlelling and the South Coast - the Libyan Sea - is the most fantastic blue, quite unlike the rest of the Med. If you're North West - Chania, then must go is a bus ride down to Chora Sfakia to explore the area - Loutro, Sweetwater, Pheonix, Marble beach, Paleohora, all wonderful snorkelling. North and South East - fly into Heraklion then hire car to Sitia and you find the 'lonely beaches' Itanos, Xerocambos, Zacros, Paliakastro - a fantastic coastline still relatively undiscovered.
Crete is an amazing island - wild, woolly and largely unspoilt.
We hire a car from holiday autos - always seems to be the best deal. There's several tourist sites on the web - cretetravel.com is good for up to date information. Explore Crete is good for the East. Rough guide is good but a bit out of date now. If you're going somewhere smallish but popular expect it to be busy in July especially at weekends (Loutro for example) Cretans love the sea & holidaying!
Best of all - enjoy it.

Hi Sally C,

Thanks for the info.
I have booked a studio in Rethymno, 4 km from the town itself.

I will be landing in Heraklion, already fixed a rental via "Elite Car" 149 EURO for 7 days in high season, not too bad I believe. I remember having checked Holiday Autos but I think they were more expensive. So staying in Rethymno area which beaches / coasts do you recommend for snorkeling ? I love underwater photo'ing. Also if you can recommend some good tavernas in the area - we love sea food, greek grill food etc..
Thanks again for the detailed infos.

Bye

hello,
I have a similar question related to the renting of a car. We'll go end of July to Agia Galini and would like to rent a car out of there. Can anyone give us some recommendation? (other info on Agia Galini like good resto's etc. are also very welcome).

Geert : try http://www.elite-rentacar.gr/
I have checked several car rental companies, and they were the cheapest and also very good communication. They offer good cars, same as all the others (more expensive ones)

As for the city you are going to : Google it :)
