Question:
Anyone any advice on travelling from Slovenia to Bulgaria, possibly through Hungary and Romania. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done such a trip or has been in any of these countries. Would be interested in backpacking, hostelling, basically a low budget trip. Plan to spend approx 3 weeks (August time) in this region of Europe.

Choices:

I went to all these countries last year(Autumn/Winter). In Slovenia we went to Lubjuna, which we thoroughly enjoyed. If you go to the train station they can book cheap accom. with local residents(some are better than others!) The museums were fantastic, and very cheap. Watch out for the Hungry horse fast food though!
We also went to the amazing caves at Postajna, which you can do as a day trip. I highly reccomend it, it's like nothing you have ever seen and the guides are unintentionally hilarious.

I didn't like Bulgaria at all, but that is just my personal experience, and I had food posioning so I am biased. Watch out for the rabid dogs in Bulgaria and Romania. we stayed in Sofia in bulgaria, I reckon you need to go to other places in the country to get a real feel for it. And I'm guessing it's a lot nicer in the summer.

I didn't think I would like Romania, but I did. We had no problems in Bucharest with security, but do keep on your guard. I loved the local dish of Sarmale, which is pickled cabbage. Sounds foul but is really very nice. Then we went to Brasov which is lovely. A cheap hotel to stay in is the Aro Sport. Whatever you do don't stay with someone called Radu who will try to pick you up at the train station. He is mad.

In Hungary we only had time to go to Budapest, but I really loved it. Very beautiful city, I prefered it to Prague. Go to the Zoo there!

Hope this helps. There is lots more I can say but I have to get back to work!!
