We were in Italy last week. We stopped in Naples with the ship, it was so beautiful. We did the 8 hour Sorrento Positano and Pompeii excursion and found it to be excellent... We were in Pompeii-2hours with a guide, on the way to the amazing Amalfi coast, we saw sorrento from a view point! we rent an English speaking driver born in Amalfi (Alfonso of the Sorrentosilverstar), to have the most comfort. he guided us also and told us a bit of everything. I went on the journey with my husband, my two boys and my parents. he got a big van with air condition: very useful!!! I'd agree. We had a fantastic time in Sorrento last year. We were there for wedding held at The Cloister, which was a great venue.
If you're looking for inexpensive accomodation try Casa Sorentina (http://www.casasorrentina.com/) which are very clean, self catering apartments, right in the centre of Sorrento.
