Hi,

We're going to Venice in a couple of weeks. Would appreciate hearing your must-do's, sees etc.

Also, if anyone could tell me where the Lido is in relation to Venice Island, would be grateful! Guide books seem to miss it out!

Cheers,

Em x

Venice - you must see toh doges palace, the campanille and St Marks Square. Also, in an evening, go to Floriens - a caffee in St Marks Square - it is very expensive (at Upwards of £6.00 for a coffee) but one drink will buy a whole evenings entertainment.

The Lido is about 1 1/2 hours from venice.

Enjoy yourself there

Malcolm

The Lido is about 20 minutes from Piazza San Marco by boat. Full details of the city's wonderful public transport system are on www.actv.it. A ticket giving unlimited travel for 24 hours costs L 18 000 (about £6 sterling).

When I've gone to Venice, I've loved taking the boat over to both of these islands - Murano and Burano. One is only about 30 minutes away from St. Mark's Square, the other is further, and you can spend a great day wandering around them both! It's especially great if you're feeling at all claustrophobic in the tiny, twisted and over-crowded streets of Venice, because the islands are less touristy and crowded.

They are both very laid back, the people are great and so friendly, and they both have vast quantities of shops that sell the famous Murano glass which is stunning, and the less-famous Burano lace. Don't miss this great half- or full-day trip!

Have a great time - I am jealous!!

Geff, thanks for the tip on the website. It was dead easy to find our way about once we were there, but helpful to be able to plan which waterbuses we needed, so thanks.

Lara, we were planning to go to Burano but kept getting caught out by it getting dark! Maybe next time (there WILL be one, we had such a good time!)

Emma, hi.

I was in Venice about a year and a half ago, and unfortunately (at least, we thought so at first) we weren't able to find accomodation in the city proper. So, we followed our guide out to Punta Sabbioni, which is about 45 minutes away from the city, about 25 minutes past Lido, and found ourselves a campsite. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of our trip - we (me and the two guys I was traveling with) stayed in this little bungalow thing w/ a small kitchen, a covered porch, and nothing going on around us except a beautiful, quiet Venetian island - we were there a week, and whenever we wanted to go into the city, we did, and when we didn't, we just relaxed - nice for a vacation to sometimes be a bit of a vacation, don't you think?

Anyway, I've not got my guidebook with me at the moment, but when I get home I'll check out the actual name of the place - I highly recommend it.

All the best,

Hunter Slaton

The Tourist Office, tucked away in a wee building on the Grand Canal side of the Piazza San Marco, has excellent itineraries which will guide you adequately on your journeys while there. Less well known, but absolutely authentic, is the Dorsoduro quarter (subject of one such intinerary), home of the University. The Piazza Sta Margherita, with its daily fish and veg. market is the hub, with a wealth of experiences literally at arms length. The Rough Guide has been our guide for many years and is THE BEST. Try to walk from there to the Rialto bridge, then use a map to show you how to find the Pescheria (Fish Market - go in the morning for the full treatment!). It's our favourite building after the Ca' d'Oro (North side of the Grand Canal, west of the Rialto Bridge).
You'll need a rest in the evenings; it's only a small place, but you can walk miles - just seeing the bit around the corner!
Have a great time
