When staying at the B & Bs in Trinidad, make sure you check with the excellent Tourist Office (TIDCO) which stays open until midnight at the airport to help you. They solidly inspect the homes and maintain a list. We stayed at a place, Fondes Amandes, in St. Ann's which we later found out was NOT approved. The owner told us (with 4 witnesses) that it was $50 a night, but when we came to pay she insisted on $65 plus a 10% service charge and $15 for transportation! She also obliged us to go on a tour with her son who runs Caribbean Discovery Tours by saying that she wouldn't be home all day and there was no way we could leave our luggage at the house. He was more than 2 hours late picking us up from the appointed location, precious time for tourists and he could have notified us of his delays with his cell phone. Terrible service! The room was small, dark, no fan, a leak in the roof which kept the carpet wet and access only on one side of the double bed! Bad Value...avoid these two although they are listed in the current guide.
