Hi,
I am travelling to Tobago for a week in May.
The FO website and the lONELY Planet forum and here talk of the levels of crime can anyone shed any more light other than taking the usual precautions, we don't intend driving and will take little flashy stuff, money belts etc.
We were thinking to stay in either Charlotteville or Castara can anyone recommend a good safe place to stay self catering bungalow type thing ideally.
Waht about the transport system on that party of the island Lonely Planet doesn't give that much detail anyone used the buses??
Ta
Lisa

I have been to Tabogo a number of times as I used to work for an airline, but have only stayed in Scarborough. I have been told stories of some of friends being ivolved in 'shoot outs' at a few of the local night clubs. I am not sure what the public transport system is like, or even if its exists! i dont remember ever seeing a bus. I think as usual prob best to avoid taking large amounts of money out with you and lock everything valuable (passport, credit cards, money) away in your suitcase. generally people are lovely and it is def not as high crime rate as Trinidad, but you never know.
hope this helps!

We are both Senior Citizens and travelled by bus in Tobago last February without any probleems The only taxi we took was on arrival at the airport to go to Speymouth. The Hotel had told us that we would not be able to do it by bus. After that we only travelled by bus. They have scheduled services from Scarborough bus station to most of the island. There they have a time table of departures but anywhere else including ticket offices if you ask for bus times they only tell you when the bus leaves Scarborough !! The timings are that erratic. The services cover most of the island. There are also other smaller busses that are run independently many of them are marked school bus although they run most of the day and cover routes much longer than than children would use.
It cost us $60 USD to get to Speymouth by taxi. From Speymouth to Scarborough cost us $4 local dollars... Go figure. It did not take that much longer. Busses on the shorter routes we used cost $1 local dollar. The drivers and passengers were friendly but the busses were ancient and rather uncomfortable. We also travveled all over Grenada in the mini bus service there. That was an experience, they drive like Rally Drivers burning rummer all the way. Not as comfortable as the similar vans in Barbados even more packed and even louder music playing.
Derek.
