Hi everybody-
I plan to spend 5 or 6 weeks in Cuba, and my primary interest is Cuban art, ranging all the way from pre-Columbian to contemporary. Besides the main galleries (i.e. The Museo Nacional de Belles Artes) can anyone recommend some smaller, perhaps lesser known, galleries worth checking out? I want to spend the majority of my time in Havana, but does anyone know of other cities with a particularly good range of interesting art/artists? |

Try not to be guiled by the art of the special period which is art for the tourists. there are many small and good galleries and reputed artists who wont be selling you their work in the roadside. One of the up and coming artists is Noa.
Provincial towns sometimes have their own brand of cuban art. Baracoa is such an example, there is a special school of painting in Baracoa: raol caboverde is the best known exponent, there is Piedra who is very good as well, Eliades has black ink drawings of the black mythology. Get to meet these three. There are many art shysters in Baracoa who try to pass off as art what is truly rubbish..but many tourists fall for it.. so there is a role for them too. |

I'm also an art fan that's why I visit a lot of museums during my trips... I recommend the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech Morocco! You will surely love that place!
