On p. 462, entry fees to the conservation area are given as $50 per person for 24 hours, plus $5 vehicle fee, plus $100 per vehicle crater fee. On p. 465, there is the statement that there is a $100 per person crater fee (six hours) in addition to the standard entry fees. Can anyone clarify this? ZZ

I've passed on your guidebook inquiry to the proper party. Hopefully we will be able to get this clarified.

Hi Zambezi

I'm the author of the Tanzania book. Park fees were a bane to get right even without typos getting in the way (my apologies!), as the fees for 2006 were only agreed at the end of 2005.

For 2006, the crater fee for Ngorongoro Conservation Area is $100 per vehicle, not per person.

The initial proposal had been to levy it per person, but was softened to per vehicle after one too many local tour operators complained. As for 2007, Ngorongoro fees and Tanzanian national park fees are anyone's guess at present.

Have a good trip – Tanzania's a great place.

Jens

Ngorngoro crater fee is US$ 100 per vihecle, but you should know that there is also US$ 30 per person for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
moreover, whenever you go to Serengeti via Ngorongoro, there is also transit fee of US$ 30 person in Ngorongoro CA plus park fees of Serengeti which is US$ 50 per person for 24 hours.
Remember, the Ngorongoro fees is a single entry and crater fees is just for half day crater tour.

Jens Finke must have a hard time to keep his Rough Guide to Tanzania up to date. There are changes every year... Herewith a little help from a friend in Arusha:

We have just been informed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of the following change effective for anyone travelling to Ngorongoro or via from 1 July 2007:

Park fees increased from USD 30 to USD 50 per person per 24 hours

Crater fee: increased from USD 100 to USD 200 per entry per car

Transit fee : anytime passing via NCA will be USD 50 per person

Hi Dirk,

Many thanks for the info - it's good to know that I'm keeping you busy; perhaps I should be paying you a retainer (or would a beer or five suffice when I get back to Arusha?!)

This is a note to all readers that I've posted a page of updates for the Rough Guide to Tanzania (2nd edition) on my own site: http://www.bluegecko.org/roughguidetotanzania/

Unless I get buried under an avalanche of anguished requests, the updates will mainly be for keeping up to date on major changes such as Ngorongoro's ever-spiralling entrance fees, and formerly reliable safari companies gone bad.

That's it for now - happy travels,

Jens
