Took my family of 6 to Egypt for 2 weeks and used the Rough Guide extensively.
Following may be of help: Aswan Hotels - we stayed at the Sara Hotel(currently unlisted by RG) which is a modern, clean, airy hotel sited on the cliff above the 1st cataract but 10 mins out of town. $20 per head per night. Has a swimming pool and stunning views across the Nile. Negatives are that the area immediately surrounding is part in development and part waste land. Generally quiet but has an Egyptian night club operating some nights. Doesn't offer tours. Manager is Mohamed Yassin 097/327234. FAX 097/327236. No email. Mintravel organised purchase of Sleeping Train tickets and a cruise, obviously taking a commission as part of the fee. Communications were clear and arrangements effective. Recommended for the independent traveller wanting help to book things in Egypt from their own countries.Email contact_mintravel@yahoo.de Cruise ship Rosetta (4*) 3 nights Aswan to Luxor. Booked from England via Mintravel for $53 per head per night full board inc sightseeing and entry charges. Fun crew, excellent food and a clean ship. Can be recommended especially as this is 'only' a 4* boat. Pharoahs Hotel, Westbank Luxor. Brilliant position to take advantage of the Theban necropolis sites. Agree with comments but would add that the warmth of welcome from the owner Refat Hassan was fantastic. It changed our stay from being enjoyable to being memorable. Also the shady terrace was an oasis as the temperatures hit 37C (a mini heatwave in February). Menu is limited but portions filling. Hope this helps |
