It seems that one of the major travel destination-areas in the United States- the Carolinas and Georgia (or the South as a whole) is largely neglected by Rough Guides. The descriptions in the U.S.A. guide are relatively out-dated (alot has changed in these states since the early '90's). A lot could be gained from a Rough Guide to the Carolinas and Georgia (covering the Outer Banks, Wilmington, the Triangle, Charlotte, the Blue Ridge and Smokies, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, the SC coast, Savannah, Atlanta, etc etc).
Not sure if anyone has any suggestions on how to reach Rough Guides directly on this. Heck, I'd be willing to do a little writing if they'd let me
Georgia really has changed. There really is two Georgais. There is Atlanta and everywhere else. I don't think Atlanta has anything worth seeing. It is a big city that looks like everyplace else. There are no natives left in the city. I think emphasis should be placed on sites to see what is left of the southern culture in the rural areas before it disappears. There is no southern culture in Atlanta
Administrator, any updates on what the editorial staff thinks of this idea? I refuse to use any guides but Rough Guides, and can't wait to have one for this area.
Unfortunately, no guide is in the works for 2007/2008, but we do have a brand new edition of the USA guide coming out in MAY. It has a pretty dense section on the South, more than 100 pages devoted to a few states and among them are Georgia and the Carolinas. I hope this may help.
Further to the response above, while we don't have anything scheduled in the next year or so along those lines, we certainly would consider a guide to Savannah & Charleston (or perhaps Georgia & the Carolinas), and are also happy to consider ideas and proposals for other destinations writers & travelers may have in mind. See http://www.roughguides.com/website/aboutus/WorkForUs/Default.aspx for relevant details.
