Imagine my surprise on returning to visit my home town of Armagh in June, from exile in Australia, to find an Australian restaurant there! Armagh has always been a backwater, never used to have any restaurants! Anyway Uluru, as it is evocatively but a little unimaginatively called, serves typical Australian cuisine - European-Asian fusion, with kangaroo available as a start and a main course. I believe the chef is an Ozzie. Homesick Australians may wish to flock to Uluru for the beer rather than the food (although it is excellent) - VB is available, and other "specials". Toohey's New was the "beer of the month" when I visited, at 3.50 pounds I think - don't translate that to Ozzie dollars, you'll scare yourself! I think the VB was cheaper.
Service by local staff was excellent - tried very hard, although we experienced some mistakes in orders/preparation. The bill for six people who didn't skimp on food or wine (let's say an average of 2 courses each, three bottles of wine and a few beers) was 160 pounds. Lunches are available and much cheaper, but I didn't get to try them. Uluru is in Market Street, right in the middle of the town, across the road from the ancient Church of Ireland Cathedral. It also has a small bar area upstairs, so you don't even have to eat. Enjoy! Pete |
