I think you will need a work visa, but no doubt if you knock on doors of pubs, bakeries, etc you may find cash in hand work-

forgot to let you know, there are a lot of work for board type jobs advertised on teh bbh noticeboard www.bbh.co.nz plus also do a google for help exchange work where you work about 4 hours a day usually on farms for your full board

Hi Dave, try WWOOFING (short for Willing Workers on Organic Farms). You work 4-5 hours a day, 6 days a week for free accomodation and food. You only have to pay 40 NZ$ for your membership & the book that lists all the jobs available. I bought mine at a book shop (since I was travelling and didn't have a permanent address, otherwise you can also become a member on the website: http://www.wwoof.co.nz/appinfo.php). I guess if you're short of money you could even just have a look into someone else's book, copy some phonenumbers and ask if they need help. There's a lot of farm work, of course, but also some guest houses and cafés. Good luck & have fun! Julia
