Hi

Gonna be headed to Aus pretty soon (Oct) but not really sure what the hotspots are. I've got a month before moving onto NZ. Can someone suggest a good iteniary? Things not to miss?

Hey,
I think that the best thing you could do is
buy a 'great southern railway ticket'. If you hold a non-ozzie passport and a backpacker card like vip or yha, they are about $500 and allow you to travel on all 3 of the trains, ghan, overland, and indian pacific unlimited for about 6 months, they save you loads of money and you get to see everything.
They will take you to Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Darwin and Perth and all the little shanty towns in between, it's brilliant.

If you go to Alice Springs, stay at Annie's place (hostel) and go on their 3 day tour of the Rock, it's fantastic fun, you sleep under the stars in swags and get some great pics to take home.

There are reps from the hostels at all the train stations so wait till you get there and go with the one that offers you the best deal.
I hope this helps, if you get one of these tickets you will have a ball!!
Happy travelling!

Don't forget the East Coast! Sydney to Cairns is a popular route for backpackers. An absolute must is the Great Barrier Reef - there are some good boat trips from the Whitsundy Islands or Cairns. Fraser Island is great fun for a 3 day tour.
