We spent a months in Oz last Christmas and saw plenty. The country is vast though so to save travelling time we bought a multi flight ticket and flew from Sydney to Melbourne, Melbourne to Alice Springs, Alice Springs to Ayers rock, Ayers rock to Cairns where we rented a car to drive to Port Douglas then Cairns back to Sydney. So what we saw was Sydney and surrounding area, Blue mountains (day trip from Sydney by train)Melbourne, day trip to the 12 apostles and highlights en route, Ayers rock (I was sceptical but it really was worth seeing)Cairns and a sailboat trip to Green Island to dive on the Barrier reef, Port Douglas and north up to Daintree and Cape Tribulation and another day diving on the Barrier reef.
No problems travelling alone, plenty of accomodation and lots of other people who will be doing the same as you. Have a great time :) Travellers Mantra: Travel light, trust few and always paddle you own canoe. |

I spent only three weeks there last year, travelling alone until meeting up with friends for the final week - so a multi flight ticket is a "must" (one can offset most of the Carbon output via Climatecare.org).
Landed at Darwin where I spent two days, plus three days in the Kakadu National Park. Flew on to Perth where I stayed for five days, visiting Swan Valley wineries, the Little Creatures Brewery (taste the beer for free!), The Pinnacles, and Rottnest Island (hire a bicycle). Flew on to Adelaide for three days, where I went wine tasting in the Barossa Valley (my liver's fine, honestly!), and visited Kangaroo Island using Sealink. Then flew on to Melbourne where I stayed for a week with friends. It's a beautiful city with plenty of vistas, a street tram system, and a big casino (if that appeals). The Dandanong Hills are beautiful. The Yarra Valley is well worth a visit if you like wine tasting (my liver's still alright), as is Philip Island (home to the small, sand-dwelling Fairy Penguins that swim ashore at sunset as if by clockwork). And don't forget the Australians themselves: very hospitable people, who tell you exactly what they're thinking! Admittedly, this was my second three-week visit; but you'll want to go back. |
