Kaikoura on the east coast of South Island is probably the best location for Whale and Dolphin watching.
You can find information on the various methods of whale watching (By Helicopter, Boat etc..) from the following website... Kaikoura, New Zealand I was in Kaikoura in February of this year (2004) and had an excellent time on the boat, the (Maori)crew were friendly, knowledgable and helpful. There is a helpful onboard presentation as you make your way out to the area where the Whales and Dolphins congregate. We were extremley fortunate and saw three whales and a herd of 250 or so Dusky Dolphins. Personally I felt the trip was well worth the money, being in the middle of a huge herd of frolicking Dolphins was extrordinary and will stick with me forever. If you want a couple of photo's that I took when there to get an idea of what it's like let me know.... "The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page." |

Kaikoura is known as one of the best spots for whale watching in the world, as three deep undersea channels which whales migrate along meet there. When we were there my wife and I were able to book onto a trip for the next morning, but they can get booked up a few days in advance so you may prefer to reserve your places to avoid dissapointment. Have a great trip.
