I am travelling around SE Asia right now and I'm looking to extend my travels. I want to travel to Australia or NZ around the end of August and work until December or thereabouts. I need help deciding where to go. I've never been to either place. I do enjoy big cities, though I'm a big cheapskate. Will I be able to support living expenses on just a temp job? In other words, I'll be out of money by the time I get there, can I work and at least break even (hopefully save)?

And what are some of the main cities like? How do Sydney, Melbourne, & Perth differ, other than the obvious population and location differences? And how do these compare with New Zealand?

I appreciate the help!

It will be difficult to find enough work to support yourself unless you have special skills and a work visa. There's fruit picking and hostel jobs available to travellers in Australia.

Sydney happens to be my favorite city in the whole world, with Auckland not far behind. There's plenty to do. I wouldn't bother with PErth because it's so far away from all the action. If you go to Australia, stick with the East coast during your first trip.
