I am flying out to Australia from the UK in 2 weeks and will be travelling along the east coast from Cairns to Sydney. Wanting to see as much as possible in a 4 wk duration I am looking to use coach travel. What are the pro's or con's of Oz Experience? Is Greyhound a more viable proposition? Any past experiences of either or different suggestions will be greatly received!

I took Oz Ex in Aug 2000 and I hated every minute of the bus trip.
-The bus drivers were inexperienced.
-Despite what they say on their website and brochures, the drivers did not help us book other hostels; instead, they dropped us off at the hostels that had special arrangements with Oz Ex. We later found out that the drivers were getting kickbacks from the hostel owners for every body they brought through the door. In many towns, there was only one place to stay and eat, and it was usually overpriced.
-Oz Ex often overbooked the busses, which left the last travellers to make it to the bus stranded at the side of the road. There were a few occassions when we had to wait 2 or more hours on the bus while the driver attempted to sort out the mess with the Oz headquarters, who were responsible for the mess.
-By the end of the trip, my buddy and I were so disgusted, we tossed our Oz Ex tickets and used Greyhound, which we found to be more comfortable, professional, and reliable. It is possible that they fixed all of their problems, but I doubt it.

I should probably add that many young, solo travellers enjoy Oz Ex because of the party atmosphere, but i just found it to be annoying.

Thanks for the response Dave B. Managed to get really cheap flights with Virgin Blue in the end. Only in Oz for 24 days and so this gives me longer to spend at each location (Cairns, Brisbane - Hervey Bay & Fraser Island, and Sydney).

My favorite stops were Byron Bay and Noosa. Both are small beach towns with their own character, and it's a good contrast from Surfers Paradise and other overdeveloped cities. There isn't much in Hervey Bay, except as a point of departure for Fraser Island. 24 days should be enough time if you plan it right. Have a good trip.
