Does anyone now if the border between Mae Sai and Tachileik is open to independent travellers, as I have heard they close it regularly. Also is there any way if travelling west to Mandalay as I heard all of the roads are closed to non-Burmese and they keep your passport at the border station.

Any information would be really appreciated
