I wouldn't be surprised at all if you can. I've walked into pharmacies both in Bangkok and on some of the islands and bought prescription meds or observed someone else doing so. They don't have the same stringent rules we have here in the West. If you have any doubts, take along a prescription to show for verification, but I'm betting you won't need it. And if they don't have Larium they will have something else you can use as an alternative. Just make sure it's really necessary for your protection where you're headed, and don't take it unless it's absolutely necessary. I've religiously used DEET instead of meds and have always had good luck, haven't had a problem in 4 trips to Thailand.
Thanks for this I'm just stopping off in Bangkok before heading to Cambodia and on to Laos. From all I read malaria is problamatic in these areas and deet may not be enough protection. What do you think?
You'd be better off with doxycycline 100mg a day if your not antibiotic allergic. I've been sick for 3 long years with Lariam (note spelling), with the equivalent of gulf war syndrome.
Pharmacists may refer to Lariam in their books as Mefloquine.- remeber if you are going for it, its 250mg weekly \- it's expensive too!
