Hey
i've visited India 5 times during the last 10 years - last summer for the first time during the monsoon. My main advice is seek elevation: its the humidity that gets you so make like the Raj and get high. I went up to Kashmir and rented a houseboat on Dal Lake. Many, quite rightly, point to the security situation and advise against travel to Kashmir. Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal are other states in the Western Himalaya that offer good choice. The Eastern Himalaya - Darjeeling in West Bengal and the state of Sikkim are also options, but the rain penetrates more. The hills in Tamil Nadu such as Ooty also offer escape from the heat of the plains. We were also briefly in Varanasi during July, and while the weather was more bearable than Delhi, i don't think i would recommend the plains for this time of year. We read newspapers that reported serious flooding and deaths in other lowland parts of India, inc. Bombay. Fly into Delhi for West Himalaya; Calcutta for East Himalaya; Bangalore for Tamil Hills |
