First, you should definitely visit the orphanage. OK it's off the usual touristic path (most people go to Hoi An because it's cute and full of tailor shops) but really interesting. The orphanage is in downtown Hoi An (108 Nguyen Truong To) and welcomes visitors. It is helped by the Kianh Foundation (English NGO) which finance most of the projects for the kids (mostly for the kids with disabilities due to Agent Orange used by the US during the war and lack of good nutrition and medical treatments; around 1/3 of the children) and have made an amazing job. Try and get some info at the Bamboo Restaurant on Tran Hung Dao (71) first since the orphanage officials don't really speak English and don't allow people from the Foundation to discuss their work with visitors. If you want to bring food, don't bring cakes or sweets, better fruits or meat. If you want to make a donation, you should deal with the Kianh Foundation directly rather than with the orphanage: you'll be sure that the money is really used for the kids (www.kianh.org.uk).
Other good plans in Hoi An: - The Lounge Bar on Nguyen Thai Hoc: happy hour from 4pm to midnight! nice place, good atmosphere, quiet room with pool table upstairs - The Seamile (on Cua Dai beach): parties on mondays, wednesdays and fridays. Also cool the rest of the time. Great value-for-money Vodka/ juice buckets - The Ha An hotel: great hotel, more expensive than average ($25-$30 for a night) but much nicer (in old houses, decoration is simple but elegant and cosy) and really in downtown hoi an, close to the market. Name of the street is Phan Boi Chau I think (parallel to the river). + all the places usually recommended... Enjoy! |
