I'm planning to return to Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh specifically, and was wondering if anyone knows the best way to get into Borneo from there. Also what do I have to do/ where exactly do I have to go to see some orangutan while there? Thanks!

I am not sure how you would get from Vietnam to Borneo, but I would imagine you would be best to go via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. From Kota Kinabalu, you can get a domestic flight (I would not recommend the bus) to Sandakan. The Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is just outside of Sandakan and is a wonderful place to see Orangutans. If you go in the morning it is quite crowded (but still worthwhile) - go for lunch and then come back for the afternoon feeding to see them with a smaller crowd looking on.
There are other places in Borneo to see Orangutans but I am not sure of the logistics. The sanctuaries in Indonesia are much tougher to get to. |

Hi Sheena,
that's right; best route is probably to fly into Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Singapore to connect to Borneo. I'm not aware of any direct flights from Vietnam into Borneo. I'm Singaporean, business traveller to KL, but never to Borneo. Go post at http://www.whoisintown.com. It has a thriving community of travellers, and there are a couple of very active members from Malaysia. They're likely able to advise you where to go and what to see. Cheers, kiatchan |
