I've heard from other travelers that it's a bad idea to distribute gifts like pens to children in Tibet because fights tend to break out. And as for adults, I was told the best thing to bring is postcards or pictures of places outside of Tibet. Any advice out there on the issue of gift-giving in Tibet?

Hi Abe - I agree in theory that it's a bad idea to distribute pens - for the reasons you said... and even worse, candy and other goodies like that. It's hard because these kids' faces light up like a Christmas tree when you give them treats... just like kids all over the world, I suppose.

When I travelled through Nepal, I wasn't well-prepared for this, but one suggestion I read was such a great one, and I will definitely do it next time I return. Bring a cheap, lightweight instant camera, and when you meet people (children or not) take some photos with your new friends and leave them behind as gifts. That, along with bringing postcards of the city or town that you come from, would be a great little gift, I think.

Not to mention it creates a bit of a beggar mentality towards foreigners. I have met a number of travelers who were great at playing magician-like games with simple props (of just hands) and the kids really love it. Great for long bus rides, and the adults appreciate it more than gifts (I think), which have pride issues.
