I am thinking of travelling to the Philippines for a few months to do some diving courses and have had different views on the safety there - I would be staying in Puerto Galera and will be travelling on my own. Anyone been there and have any tips for me, generally or on safety as a woman travelling alone?

I lived in the Philippines for seven years and as long as you take the same sensible precautions you'd take anywhere you won't have any problems. The diving at Puerto Galera is exceptional. The only negative is that it does have a few seedy bars. If you're diving there I highly recommend Asia Divers (www.asiadivers.com). Asia Divers also operates El Galleon Beach Resort, which is the best place to stay. Simple, clean, affordable, good food . . . and right on the seafront.
