Here is a list of hotel you can look over for Bangkok.

Having a hotel near the Skytrain really helps in getting around the city. http://www.thailandguru.com/bangkok-bts-skytrain.html

Chiang Mai:

I used the Montri Hotel three times. It is within walking distance to the Night Market and travel agencies for tours. Internet shops, stores and restaurants nearby. Various priced rooms.

You don't mention any price range. Knowing the price range narrows down the recommendations you get.

You can also check with these other sources too!

In case this is of interest to anyone who finds themselves in Phuket this may be of use .....

Same Same Guest House in Patong on the beautiful island of Phuket, Thailand.... famous for it's tsunami experience as much as its gorgeous beaches and wild nightlife.

If you are lone female(s) travelling to this part of the world, bear in mind this gay friendly, nice and clean, cheap budget accommodation in the heart of Patong. Only a short walk away from Patong Beach, Paradise Complex, Bangla Rd and Patongs many restaurnants.

European owned and run by friendly Thai staff, is cheap as chips but clean and has sizable double rooms with en suite shower and air-con. Situated above a beauty salon below at street level.... but don't be put off... not far to go for a manicure and pedicure. A "couple and female only" policy, so no single beer swilling men and no bar girls coming and going like in most other places.

I do not have an email address but their website (which is very basic) is www.samesamephuket.com and their phone is +66 8153 83331

Other quick tips are only pay 100 baht for any Tuk Tuk in and around Patong, avoid anyone offering you scratch cards it’s a con, Dangs Cafe close to the Jungceylon end of Bangla Road..... OH and never TIP more than 10-20 baht in restaurants !

If I can be of any help on other matters please send me a message….

Not sure if this is too late. But check out this newly opened hostel called "HQ Hostel" (www.istayhq.com). It's very bright, clean, modern and safe. More importantly, it's located in the central location of Silom Rd, near 2 skytrain stations and one subway station. Staffs are very friendly. Hope this help.
