Folks this is an email I have sent to the Rough Guides Staff

Dear Staff

I was staying for sometime in a guesthouse in Malaysia, Johor State, near Mersing called Kalis Guesthouse.

Everything was fine initially and then a friend of the owner started visiting and staying there.

Small things started to go missing like sunglasses, cigarettes, etc and even my keys, and I thought they were misplaced.
Then somethin happened that irked me which was that the landlord, Khalid, asked me one day if my laptop was secured against theft. I asked him why and he didnt answer.

Then there was a large theft of laptops and handphones from other visitors, and the police thought that it was an inside job as a window that was normally locked and cant be opened by the occupants as it is too tight, was unusually opened on that night. However the two staff were quite trustworthy.
The police caught the thieves who were friends of this friend of the owner. They think the friend had forced open the window during the day, but gave the impression that it was "shut" to the occupants. This allowed the thieves to get in at 3am.

Just recently my dictaphone was stolen and it happened just after I saw this friend of the owner coming unusually from my room which was away from the other rooms. Ie there is no reason for why he needed to be near the room.

I questioned the landlord about it and said I was going to the police. Before I got to the police station he had already rung and lied that I had a friend staying there which was untrue.

The police said its obviously a coverup and have been watching the place as there have been other incidents of theft.
It seems the friend, who had been in gaol before for theft, has been coming and going from the guesthouse for sometime.

I am writing this as a warning that it is most likely that a thief is staying at the guesthouse and that the landlord is covering for his friend.

The landlord is also wanting to open another new guesthouse just north of the present one and the friend will also be visiting there.

Yours sincerely
David Free
