Can anyone recommend a country/region that this inexperienced first time traveller could visit for a 'taste' of South Asia during three weeks in march/April 2002?

start off in thailand flying to bangkok, it is a mixture of old and new cultures to get your bearings and a few beers and visas for Lao, north to chang mai region for treks amongst the lush countryside and villages, across into Lao to Luang Prabang a UNESCO world heritage city, down to Van Vieng, biking, caving, floating on tubes and a nice place to relax, then back down to Vientienne and moan about the place as most people do but I didn't think it was that bad, grab a bike and cycle around. South back to Bangkok and if you have time fly or bus it to the islands before returning though it may be a squeeze in 3 weeks. Asia with all the huts and pigs living underneath is definitely in the northern regions, the south is mainly where holiday makers go.

Indonesia is marvellous place but the current political climate may make it a bit tricky. It has everything, corals, beaches, volcanoes, tradition, religious ancient temples. Fantastic place.

Enjoy

I think Malaysia would be an ideal place. It's easy to get around and there is plenty to see whether it's cutural, beaches or adventure that you are after. Communication isn't a problem as most people you encounter have a smattering of English or someone near them does!
Transport, you have a choice of buses, train, ferries and flying (although flying internally can be expensive) although cost of living is cheap.
It's also exotic, a warm climate and the food is so good!
Check out Malaysia!
