I'm planning to make a long trip to Asia next year together with my boyfriend. We have heard that it is difficult to travel from Tibet to India overland and that it is only possible to groups.
Does anyone know whether this is true? And if so, is it possible to join a group on the spot?

Hi,
I bought the Rough Guide "First-Time Asia" book a few months ago when I thought I would have time to take a big trip to Asia in 2002. The book really helped me answer the nitty-gritty questions I had. I just looked up Tibet and India in the "Border Crossings" section and it says that there's no overland crossing allowed. Under the "Nepal-Tibet" section it says, "Currently not allowed for independent travellers on public transport (though it is permitted in the other direction). However, foreigners who have booked inclusive tours of Lhasa (these can be arranged in Kathmandu) are allowed to cross here; the tour companies organize the paperwork." Hope that helps...

I have met people who have done it on the public bus, but have not done so myself.

How are you getting to Tibet?

If you have some money there is a woman running a lodge in Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, who may be able to arrange an unusual route from Yunnan into Tibet (currently, officialy not allowed). Supposedly very beautiful. If interested let post a message and I will give you the contact info. It wouldn't be cheap though, I think.

Hi. I'm currently in Kunimg and am looking for a way to get to Tibet, preferably via Zhongdian. Any information you do have (prices, people to ask) would be a great help. Thanks. Belle.

india and china have strained relations. and china keeps a firm grip on tibet. so, short of smuggling youself in (not reccomended, obviously) i don't think you can go overland india-tibet. sorry.
