I'm planning to visit Japan and would like recommendations for books to read before I go. (Well yes I know the obvious one!) I've just read Extremes: Contradictions in Contemporary Japan by a guy called G M Thomas. A great read and really helpful. But are there others? I've heard Donald Richie is good. But so so comments on Alex Kerr. Any feedback appreciated.

Charlie, I agree that Extremes is a good read. I bought it before deciding to join the JET programme. I'd also check out some blogs as well. Start with www.easterwood.org and then use his list of recommended blogs for some more up-to-date thoughts on Japan. You'll often find the unusual there.
