Hi there, it is the first time I am going to BKK to the new airport. How to get to KSroad? How to get to Hualomphong train station from the airport?

Am a bit confused with info about bus stations, train stations, taxis... Thank you!

If you take a taxi, make sure the taxameter is switched on. I asked for it (as I had been recommended before, too), but I had already hopped on the taxi and it had started driving so the guy pretended not to understand... Pretty frustrating start... The other time I used a taxi in BKK after that, I asked about the taxameter and only got inside the taxi once the driver had nodded his OK and switched it on. Don't know about busses, though. Just remember it was quite far from the airport to Khaosan Road.

First are you going from the airport to KSR (Khao San Road) or to the train station?

Both places can be reached by meter taxi. Avoid all of the touts offering rides to "someplace" when you pass through the arrivals hall. Go to the bottom level, outside near door 7 & 8 you will find the taxi sign up desk. The person at the desk will ask for your hotel name and address, he is supposed to check to see if the meter is correct (starts at 35 baht) and tells the driver where to go. You get a form with the address on it along with the taxi number. The form tells you how to complain if you have problems with the driver or price. You pay the meter fare when the ride is over. You also pay a 50 baht surcharge (only from the airport - never in town) at the end of the ride. If your taxi uses the toll road you will be responsible for any tolls. Total fare for the ride to KSR will probably be around 350 total, that includes the surcharge, the toll charges if any, plus the meter fare. If the driver does not have money for the toll charges he may ask you for it, that's okay.

Always make sure you have small bills for paying taxi drivers or cheap things in small shops. Even a 500 baht note may be too high for them to cash, besides they think you are stupid anyway and will say keep the change! Never over tip, it makes the rest of us look cheap! Thai's don't tip much anyway!

I never have a problem with the driver using a meter, especially from the airport. In town avoid taxi cabs parked (lurking) at bus stations or in front of hotels - they will want to bargain! Hail a moving taxi at the road and tell the driver meter only, if he wants to bargain then tell him no and get another - there seems to be thousands of taxi cabs in Bangkok! Taxi prices in Bangkok, using the meter, are some of the cheapest found in big cities worldwede!

You must be young, usually it is younger travelers who chose KSR first. That's okay but keep in mind that if you stay in the Siam or Sukhumvit area you can use the Skytrain rapid transportation service. This Skytrain service connects to most of the popular tourist areas and including the Ekamai bus station plus it connects with the SUBWAY which has a connection for the national train station.

From KSR you can take a meter taxi to the train station. Or, from the airport you can also take the meter taxi to the train station if you want or to the nearest subway connection and continue on to the train station using the subway. I would probably go for the taxi direct to the national train station.

There are several big bus stations. Usually your destination determines which bus station you head for.

At the airport, if you arrive during the day or early evening, there is an Airport Express bus that takes you into town. The Airport Express bus charges 150 per passenger. This bus takes around twice the time a taxi takes to get to your destination. There are several destination routes, besides Sukhumvit Road, there is a bus that gets you close to KSR and close to the train station.

Also at the airport is a fairly good bus station. You have to take the free shuttle bus to get to there. You can take a cheap 35 baht city bus into town and from the closest point take a taxi from there to where you need to go.

Two people sharing a meter taxi from the airport will be about the same price as taking the Airport Express bus and much faster.

Personally, I would find a hotel or hostel on Sukhumvit Road so I can use the cheap and efficient Skytrain service. One place popular with backpackers and thrift travelers is the Suk 11 Hostel.

Okeydokey.

Go cheap - go often!
