I want to go travelling aroung Europe for a month in August and my friend has just told me that she isn't going to be able to afford to come with me anymore. Am I mad to go on my own? Has anyone else done this?

I'm a female traveler, too and I first travelled alone 3 years ago - I was 20 then. I loved it and I'm thinking of doing it again this summer.
Being a single traveler: The essence of freedom! - you make your own choices, go where you please, eat what you please etc. If you don't have a travelling partner you're much more open towards other people, foreigners and locals - stay at (decent)hostels, you'll meet young travelers from all over the world and you'll find out that there are actually many women travelling solo and loving it!
Safety: Europe is safe for the female traveler. You have absolutely nothing to worry about, except from the possibility of petty theft at some very touristy spots, perhaps - but you can definately deal with this if you're careful enough.
Remember: all second thoughts (insecurity, uncertainty and the stuff) will vanish as soon as you arrive at your destination. Believe me! HAVE FUN! -mundo-

Yes, it can be a bit scary at times but as long as you follow the same rules of safety as you would do at home, not walking down dimly lit streets etc, you should be fine.
Go for it. You only live once and if you always wait for the "right time" you'll probably never go. I am traveling to West Africa this summer alone and I can not wait.
hello, I'm going on a four-month backpack through Europe by myself. All of my friends were either too busy or too poor, so rather than put it off, I decided to go it alone. I've travelled though Australia by myself but never for more than a few days so I'm a little nervous but excited too.

Go for it, you will have a fantastic time. You have the freedom to do what you want, how you want to do it and how long you want to stay. You will also find that you will met other travellers/backpackers in hostels etc that may be going in the same direction and you travel with them for a few days etc. I did it and met some fantastic people that are still my friends. Europe is very easy to travel in so enjoy where you are!

I'm heading to Europe in a couple of weeks on my own after being let down by friends. I was going to put it off until I'd got someone to go with but then I decided life's too short to sit around waiting so I'm going on my own and I'm really looking forward to it! GOOD LUCK!!!!!
