Last year a friend and i went to Naples. we had a wonderful time, and would really recommend it, but we could have had some serious trouble. we'd read in some of the guide books that the area around Naples train station is a bit rough, but when we arrived we realised it's the middle of the red light district. most of the hotels around the station double as brothels and there are pimps and drug dealers working inside the terminal, so this message is for two reasons:
1. be careful if you go to Naples; avoid the area around the station at night if possible, and certainly don't go there alone.
2. this year we're going to Florence, and we wondered if there are any areas to be avoided there, or anywhere we shouldn't go after dark?

Thanks
Gylly.

Definitely Le Cascine Park, for the same reason.

we were in florence walking up the main hill when i man stepped out completely naked from behind a tree and grinned at us like an idiot.

he didnt do anything threatening but you can never be too careful.

allyways on your own anywhere is a no no.

if you think it doesnt seem like a good idea, then go with your instincts

otherwise Italy is fairly safe!

I have traveled throughout Italy, France and Spain. Both with a group and solo. I have ventured out alone but try to be cautious without letting the caution ruion my trip. I think there are some good tips and articles for female travelers on
Transitions Abroad

Be safe but also enjoy!

The area around the train station in Florence is also pretty dodgy, particularly in the evening. Cascine Park can be lovely during daylight hours. I have great memories of walking along the Arno during sunset. I would avoid it at night fall, though.

i have been travelling around italy with my mum and sister many times, and even though i have had a couple of nastyish experiences (even during the day) i love the country (i cant explain why :))
in sienna me and my sister got alot of hassle, and were followed etc... and it got a bit scary, but if you remember to keep yoour cool, and just be aware and assertive, youl be ok i think. florence (managed to get lost haha) and ended up in a dodgy part (prostitutes etc) which was by a station, and even the police officer we asked for directions seemed a bit dubious... but i cant remember what it was called. it wasnt the main station though. it always seems to depend on how touristy the area is as to how much hassle you get. dont worry though, it is a beautiful country, full of very hospitable and lovely ppl, theres just a few dodgy characters as usual.
