Hi everyone, my name is Gabby and i am considering taking off at the end of Sept 2002 to go find out what life is about in South America. I am really keen to chat with someone who has been and done and got the tee shirt or someone who is also thinking of going. I have limited funds but enough to get a flight over at least. Would anyone be able to help me so that i can try to formulate some kind of plan of action for the first time in my life??! I am a very spontaneous girl by nature and am so keen to take off whilst i have this career break. Life is too short!!

Well- I'm taking redundancy from my job , dont have a serious boyfriend or kids and am thinking of going travelling alone early next year. The only travelling I have done other than going round Europe in the summer in a VW is Australia for 5 months with an ex boyfriend, Trouble is I am a (very young and mad) 35 and keep thinking that I will be too old to backpack? Am I being paranoid? Advice please!
I am a total party animal very outgoing and always meeting new people. My best friend wants to come too but cant afford it. Thinking of going to Oz again, Latin America and wherever the fancy takes me.. I think its a case of never too old to start I hope!

My advice is do it, don't hesitate just do it. If you hesitate you'll start freakin' out, then you'll never do it.
I'm going to SA for 6 months, starting on the 13th Sep. For the first 4 weeks I'm taking part in a 4 week Dragoman tour thru' Peru, finishing in La Paz (Bolivia) on 13th October. From then on I've got 5 months to explore ther rest of the region. I haven't got any particular plans. I'm just going to hook up with interesting people who are planning on heading to interesting areas. I never contemplated going travelling by myself until this year. Then suddenly I though f##k it, there's a whole world going on out there, and this is my last chance to get out there and see it.
It was all a bit scary at first, but now I've committed myself, I'm really excited.
Feel free to contact me if you think I can be of any assistance. Also if you're around La Paz the same time as me, drop me a line to see if we can meet up.
All the best.

I plan to be in South America in January 2003 if there is anyone out there who is doing the smae thing or has done it and has some advice or reccomendations I would be glad to hear from you. Oh I am gratifed there are some women travelliing out there of 35 plus becouse I havent ment any yet I was beginning to think I was very strange person..... e-mail windowontheworld@hotmail.com
Not that I was ancient, but at 43 I quit a steady job, cashed in my pension, and bought a one-way ticket to Cape Town. Three years and 23 countries later, I decided to settle down again -- but my gaze never drifts far from that backpack. I did it on my own, though I met and teamed up with dozens of wonderful people along the way. I was cautious but not fearful, open but not careless. I worked when I needed to (mostly as a writer/editor) and mostly, I lived in the day. I can say with no reservation that they were the best three years of my life (and arguably the poorest). Go girl!
Reading your postings is dead inspiring - you are definatly not alone. I'm on the road soon too - got redundancy and taking off to China and SE Asia - then Oz - early in 2002.
I'm a mid 30's woman and have always dreamed of taking a proper break - have travelled a fair bit in Vietnam, SA and Australia - and found I had the best of times when I was on my own - nearly all the memories in fact where when I did stuff and met people (and I met loads - dead easy))).
So - yes I'm nervous, but also dead excited - and from what I remember us middle youth women and men have plenty of company. Yes - most other travellers are in their 20s - but lots are OK - and there's loads of older people too. So - go for it - might see you out therexx
