Depends on where you're from. Don't wear skimpy or revealing clothing - tell any dodgy characters that ask you out you're meeting your boyfriend "The Hulk" in the next town - don't eat strangers food no matter how innocent they seem. If you meet other travellers find out what they're up to and you might be able to join up and save on costs.

I've only been to Thailand but this is my advice:This might sound obvious but do make an effort to learn a few Thai phrases. Ask thai people you meet to help you. Thye will really appreciate any effort you make, and will get great fun from you when you mess it up! Its a great way to ensure good prices on everything. If you can say, 'How much?' 'You're killing me!' Great food, thanks', and of course please and thank you, things like that, you'll go a long way. Numbers are great too.
